Freddie Kitchens Takes Over Play-calling Duties for Giants in Week 15

In a surprising turn of events, Freddie Kitchens, the Giants' tight ends coach, will take over play-calling duties for the Week 15 game against his former team, the Cleveland Browns. This comes after offensive coordinator Jason Garrett tested positive for COVID-19 and will work remotely to help the Giants complete their gameplan.

Daniel Jones, the Giants' quarterback, could be absent from Sunday's game due to a sprained ankle sustained during the second quarter of the previous game against the Arizona Cardinals. If Jones is unable to play, the Giants will heavily rely on the run game and conservative calls from Kitchens.

Kitchens, who previously spent two seasons with the Cleveland Browns, served as offensive coordinator in 2018 and head coach in 2019. During his tenure with the Browns, he worked closely with quarterback Baker Mayfield. However, the specific implications of Kitchens taking over play-calling for the Giants are not detailed.

The Browns have had a tough defensive season, currently holding the 27th-ranked defense in terms of points allowed in the league. In their last two outings, they have allowed 35 and 47 points respectively.

This primetime clash between the Giants and Browns is scheduled for Week 15. James Bradberry, the Giants' top cornerback, was placed on the COVID-19 list later on Thursday afternoon, unrelated to Garrett's positive test.

Note: Kitchens' play-calling was principally with the Browns, especially as offensive coordinator and then head coach in 2019; there is no evidence he had play-calling duties for the Giants.

Freddie Kitchens' Coaching Background

Freddie Kitchens served as the offensive coordinator and associate head coach for the Cleveland Browns in 2018, and then was promoted to head coach for the Browns during the 2019 NFL season. His play-calling with the Browns was part of his responsibilities as offensive coordinator and continued into his head coaching tenure, although specific details on his style or success as a play-caller during that time are not outlined in the results. After his NFL head coaching stint, Kitchens transitioned back to college football coaching.
