In a significant development, the number of football banning orders in England and Wales has increased by 12% to 2,435, marking the highest figure since the 2012-13 season. This rise is attributed to an increase in football-related arrests and incidents, particularly those involving public or violent disorder.

According to data released by the Home Office, Manchester United fans accounted for the highest number of arrests last season, with 121 arrests. Manchester City followed closely with 94 arrests, while West Ham had 77. Notably, Manchester United's banning orders rose from 89 to 108, and West Ham saw an increase from 93 to 112 by the end of the season.

The majority of United's arrests took place at home games at Old Trafford, with 34 linked to public or violent disorder offenses. This reflects not only the large size of their fanbase but also a higher incidence of disorder at their matches, especially during a season where the club finished 15th in the league table.

The rise in banning orders corresponds to a slight increase in new banning orders issued (685) compared to the previous season (683). However, it is worth noting that there was a modest decline in total football-related arrests for the first time since fans returned post-COVID, yet the number of banning orders still grew.

The increase in arrests for possession of Class A drugs also contributed to this surge, rising from 9% to 19% of arrests since the offence was updated in November 2022. Hate crimes were the most common reported incidents, blighting 420 matches. The number of hate crimes significantly increased from 341 to 420.

Policing Minister Dame Diana Johnson stated that police efforts are paying off and strong action is being taken to stop violence and disorder from ruining football. She added that the rise in banning orders is evidence that the authorities are taking a firm stance against unacceptable behaviour.

In conclusion, the 2024-25 season saw a rise in football-related arrests and banning orders, with Manchester United fans topping the list. The authorities remain committed to addressing these issues and ensuring that football matches are safe and enjoyable for all.
