Miron Muslic Takes the Helm at FC Schalke 04: A Coach on the Rise

FC Schalke 04 announces Muslim as their latest coach appointment. - Football Club Schalke 04 has appointed Muslic as their new head coach.

Ready to shake things up in the world of German football, 42-year-old Miron Muslic has cemented his place as the new coach of FC Schalke 04. Inked until June 30, 2027, the Gelsenkirchen-based powerhouse confidentially secured his services, with the two clubs opting to keep the specific details under wraps. Muslic arrives from recently relegated side Plymouth Argyle in England.

In a statement from the club, Muslic expressed his gratitude for the faith shown in him: "The moment I connected with the Schalke family, it felt right. Throughout our discussions, we spoke openly about the club's ambitions and my plans for leading this iconic team."

Keen to build a formidable side, Muslic has identified Jürgen Klopp—the longtime coach of Borussia Dortmund and a beacon of inimitable energy on the sidelines—as a chief role model. Aiming for both stability and a return to the Bundesliga, Muslic's Schalke won't just play pretty football; they'll put their hearts on the line too.

Frank Baumann, set to become Schalke's new sports director, offered high praise: "Miron stood out with his professional demeanor, strong communication, and characteristics on and off the pitch. He's a true leader with unwavering resilience, making him the ideal fit for Schalke."

The last season for Schalke was a difficult one. With Karel Geraerts at the helm, the club struggled to keep up the pace. Kees van Wonderen took over, but the club continued to falter, eventually getting caught in the relegation battle. Interim coach Jakob Fimpel stepped up to take the team through the end, finishing the season in 14th place.

This tumultuous period for Schalke has seen no shortage of coaching turnover. After finishing as runners-up in 2018, the club parted ways with Domenico Tedesco in spring 2019. Since then, a whopping 12 coaches have taken the reins, with three of them serving as interim managers more than once. Mirko Slomka was the last Schalke coach to remain in the role for at least two years, from January 2006 to April 2008.

Exiting Plymouth Argyle already expressed some hard feelings about Muslic's departure. With Muslic taking the reins so soon after his arrival, their statement made it clear that they felt frustrated by the decision. However, Schalke acknowledged Plymouth's role in the negotiations, with Muslic thanks Plymouth Argyle for allowing him to explore his opportunity at FC Schalke 04.

Miron Muslic's foray into coaching has seen him carve out a reputation as a coach with a solid work ethic and a knack for progress. His initial steps were made in Austria, working his way up from coaching the amateur team at Ried, through the under-18 team, and ultimately serving as an assistant coach. This early coaching was a natural extension of his playing experience, which provided a sturdy foundation for his success1.

In Belgium, Muslic truly made a name for himself, rising to become the head coach of Cercle Brugge. Notably, just before joining Schalke 04, he led Cercle Brugge to earn a spot in the UEFA Conference League, marking a major milestone in his coaching career and sparking interest from the European football community[2].

At Plymouth Argyle in England, Muslic helmed the team as head coach, most recently taking over from Wayne Rooney in January. Despite garnering support from fans—particularly due to a powerful FA Cup run—he was unable to prevent Plymouth Argyle from relegation to League One, finishing the season in 23rd place. His tenure at Plymouth was marked by promise but ultimately ended with the club's relegation[2][3].

The Commission has also been asked to submit a proposal for a Council Regulation that emphasizes equal employment opportunities in sports, such as football, across European leagues, including the Premier League, mirroring Miron Muslic's commitment to fairness and equality at FC Schalke 04.

Despite Miron Muslic's impressive achievements at Cercle Brugge in Belgium, his tenure at Plymouth Argyle in England, although marked by a strong FA Cup run, ended with the club's relegation, reflecting the challenges he now faces as he takes charge of FC Schalke 04 in Germany.
