Israel's Foreign Minister, Gideon Sa'ar, is set to travel to New York for the UN meeting, as the international community continues to express concern over the ongoing hostage crisis and the stalled ceasefire talks between Israel and Hamas.

Two Israeli citizens, Evyatar David and Rom Braslavski, have been held hostage in Gaza since an attack by Hamas in October 2023. Distressing videos showing the hostages pleading for their lives have recently surfaced, prompting thousands of Israelis to protest for a ceasefire deal.

The negotiations for a new ceasefire agreement, mediated by Egypt, Qatar, and the US, have remained deadlocked since early August 2025. The UN Security Council and member states have repeatedly called for the immediate and unconditional release of the hostages.

The League of Arab States has notably endorsed a high-level international conference outcome document that calls on Hamas to release hostages and disarm as prerequisites for a ceasefire and political solution. However, the situation remains unresolved.

Meanwhile, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza is worsening significantly under Israeli restrictions on aid entry. Food insecurity has reached critical levels, and ongoing hunger-related deaths have been reported by Gaza’s Ministry of Health. The severe humanitarian crisis complicates ceasefire efforts and Israel faces increasing global isolation related to plans for further reoccupation of Gaza.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu plans to convene the Cabinet this week to discuss strategies for defeating Hamas, securing the release of the hostages, and ensuring Gaza no longer poses a threat to Israel. Netanyahu has also met with the International Committee of the Red Cross to ask for access to bring food and medicine to the hostages, but the Red Cross states that such access has never been granted by Hamas.

Rom Braslavski, the father of one of the hostages, believes the hostages' hunger is intentional. In a recent interview, he described his son's condition as worse than four months ago, with no hope left in his eyes. Hamas' military wing has reportedly agreed to allow Red Cross access to deliver food to the hostages, under certain conditions.

Experts warn that Gaza faces a worst-case scenario of famine due to Israel's blockade. Between March 2 and May 19, no aid entered Gaza, and aid has been limited since then. The Gaza Health Ministry reported five more adult deaths due to malnutrition-related causes in the past 24 hours, bringing the total to 87 since late June.

As the crisis continues, Prime Minister Netanyahu is facing opposition within Israel regarding potential increases in military operations. The situation remains tense, with the fate of the hostages and the future of Gaza hanging in the balance.
