Catherine Pégard Appointed as Emmanuel Macron's Cultural Advisor

Catherine Pégard, a renowned figure in French culture and politics, has been appointed as the cultural advisor to President Emmanuel Macron. This appointment was confirmed by Macron's entourage on Wednesday.

Pégard's career in the cultural sphere began in 2011 when she was appointed by then-President Nicolas Sarkozy to head the Château de Versailles. Her tenure spanned across three different presidencies, making her a unique figure in the history of the prestigious palace.

During her time at the Château de Versailles, Pégard served for over three terms, hosting several summits and meetings with heads of state and government. She also welcomed foreign investors, contributing to the palace's growth and development.

One of the most significant events during her tenure was the visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin in 2017, when Macron received him at the Château de Versailles shortly after his election.

Pégard's relationship with Macron developed during her time at the Château de Versailles, which she led with a strong emphasis on trust. This was evident in her statement in 2008, when she was the editor-in-chief of the weekly Le Point, saying, "I have always based my relationship with politicians on trust."

However, Pégard's appointment as the interim president of the Château de Versailles in 2021 caused a stir within her own camp. Despite reaching the legal age limit for heads of public establishments, Macron appointed her by decree and amendment, leading to a struggle that shocked the French political landscape.

Following her tenure at the Château de Versailles, Pégard moved on to become the director of cultural development at the French Agency for the Development of Al-Ula (Afalula) in September 2024.

Throughout her career, Pégard has demonstrated a commitment to fostering cultural exchange and promoting France's rich history and heritage. As Macron's cultural advisor, she is expected to continue this work, providing valuable insights and guidance to the President.

Pégard's appointment as cultural advisor was also reported by Le Monde and Le Figaro, further emphasising her importance in the French cultural and political scene. As she returns to the Élysée Palace, Pégard is set to play a significant role in shaping France's cultural policy under Macron's presidency.
