Following their initial victory, the UNM men's golf team prepares to safeguard their home grounds at the Tucker Invitational tournament.
UNM Men's Golf Team Prepares for 70th William H. Tucker Invitational
The University of New Mexico (UNM) men's golf team is gearing up for the 70th William H. Tucker Invitational this weekend at the UNM Championship Course. The team, which returned several key players from a squad that made it to the NCAA Championship last season, is hopeful for a strong showing.
Senior Mesa Falleur, who has risen from 3,404 to 164 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings since joining UNM last summer, is one of the players to watch. Despite a back injury that kept him from swinging a club the week prior to the first tournament, Falleur delivered a solid performance, finishing third at the Wohali tournament with a score of 7-under.
Freshman Thayer Plewe, who recently returned from a two-year mission through The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, also impressed in his first college event. Plewe finished 12th at 1-under. Wyatt Provence, another senior, also had a standout performance at the Wohali tournament, delivering a career-best 65 to place seventh at 5-under.
The 54-hole tournament will be played Friday and Saturday with an 18-team field. Senior Alvaro Portillo and freshman Emil Albers will compete as individuals. The specific players participating in the tournament for the UNM men's golf team have not been publicly listed.
Coach Jake Harrington is optimistic about the team's chances, believing they have five players performing well, which could lead to a change in results throughout the season. Harrington also believes this UNM team can be one of the best to come through Lobo golf. He even goes as far as to say that Falleur has the potential to be an All-American.
It seemed reasonable to assume it might take a little bit of time for the Lobos to click, given their new lineup and returning players' summer breaks. However, Harrington considers the first tournament of the season an "outlier." He thinks the team could have a different lineup for every tournament this season, indicating a team that is seven deep to start the year.
The Lobos' starting lineup includes Falleur, Provence, Johnnie Clark, Oliver Cage, and Plewe. The team finished the Wohali tournament as co-champion with Arizona State (14-under as a team). Harrington is hopeful that the team can start winning this weekend at the 70th William H. Tucker Invitational.
