Renovation of the B33 Road in Wachau Region Completed

The B33 road in the picturesque Wachau region has undergone a significant renovation, aiming to improve safety and ensure smooth traffic flow. The project, which began with a major rockslide causing 6,000 cubic meters of debris, has been successfully completed before Easter.

According to Provincial Councillor for Transport Udo Landbauer (FPÖ), construction on the B33 is expected to begin in late autumn. The renovation of the road section adjacent to the rockslide cost approximately 2.1 million euros.

During the renovation, comprehensive safety measures were implemented. Over 400 meters of safety systems will be erected along the B33, including temporary 'Rock&Safe' systems and permanent cable barriers. In the southern section, the temporary safety system will be up to five meters high, and in the northern area, it will be three meters high. Around 25 to 30 rock anchors will be installed in the slope to ensure long-term stability.

The 'Rock&Safe' system, temporarily securing the slope in the connecting areas to the original rockslide event, has been installed. Permanent cable barriers will replace the temporary systems in the future.

The official coordination with the district administration, forestry, and nature conservation for the renewal work in summer 2025 will be followed by tendering and awarding. Comprehensive safety measures will be implemented in the rockslide areas, adjacent to the B33, during this period.

The asphalt paving and road markings have been completed on the B33. The final spray coating of the renovated slope will be applied on Thursday. The B33 road now shines in a new light after the renovation.

Despite the lack of available details on the names of persons or institutions involved in the security measures project related to the B33 renovation in the Wachau region, or information on an agreement about planning additional security measures for the rockfall site areas in summer 2025, Provincial Councillor Landbauer is proud that the renovation was completed on time.

The renovation of the B33 marks a significant step towards ensuring the safety of travellers in the Wachau region and promoting smooth traffic flow on this important road.
