Following the proclamation of the school year 2025/2026 commencement in Saxony: SPD and the Left call for genuine, lasting strategies

In the heart of Germany, the Saxon education system is undergoing significant changes, as both the SPD and the Left factions propose reforms to tackle teacher shortages and modernize teaching methods.

The latest hiring of around 1,100 new teachers for the school year 2025/2026, announced on August 6th, 2025, is a step in the right direction, according to the Ministry of Culture. However, Gerald Eisenblätter, the education policy spokesman for the SPD faction in the Saxon State Parliament, believes that further investments and reliable education planning are necessary to fully address the teacher shortage.

Eisenblätter and his fellow SPD members, alongside the Left faction, advocate for several key reforms. Enhancing teacher recruitment and retention is at the forefront, with a focus on improving working conditions, professional development opportunities, and targeted recruitment, including international talent acquisition.

Modernizing teaching approaches is another priority. They advocate for expanding innovative and practice-oriented educational offerings like the "Productive Learning" (PL) program in lower secondary schools, which combines school-based learning with practical experience and individualized support. This approach is designed to better engage students and prepare them for vocational pathways.

The proposals also emphasize the need for stronger support for diverse learners, with better resources for special needs education and flexible curricula to accommodate students with emotional, social, or learning difficulties. The reforms also aim to promote inclusive education.

Extending full-day care and schooling programs is another focus, as it can improve educational outcomes and better align with modern family needs. Furthermore, teachers, especially those involved in innovative programs like PL, should receive ongoing training to stay updated with the latest teaching methodologies.

International cooperation and talent inflow are also integral to the proposed reforms. Saxony aims to attract international educators and students to mitigate shortages and bring new perspectives to teaching. This aligns with Saxony's broader strategy to recruit skilled workers and students from abroad.

However, concerns remain. Luise Neuhaus-Wartenberg, the education policy spokeswoman for the Left faction, questions the attractiveness of the teaching profession and the competitiveness of the local offer. She believes that modern educational concepts need more room to make Saxony's education system truly attractive.

The Left also voices doubts about the resolution of the teacher shortage in Saxony. They propose creating more comprehensive schools and giving families the freedom to choose the school type. They also advocate for significantly more multiprofessional teams, school social work at all locations, and consistent digitization.

Moreover, Neuhaus-Wartenberg emphasizes the need for joint problem-solving solutions that are developed with all sides and lead to necessary goodwill. The lack of such solutions is a concern for both factions, as they work towards making Saxony's education system future-proof and reflective of contemporary teaching methodologies and societal needs.
