The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has taken a significant step in the world of boxing, overturning the International Boxing Association's (IBA) decision to exclude Imane Khelif and Lin Yu-ting from the 2023 World Championships. The IOC's decision allows these athletes, who won gold at the Paris Summer Games, to participate in the upcoming Paris Olympics.

The IBA had excluded Khelif and Lin, citing unexplained gender tests as the reason. The IBA claimed that these athletes did not meet the required participation criteria and had competitive advantages compared to other female participants. However, the IOC deemed the IBA's decision as arbitrary and without proper procedure.

In a move towards ensuring fair competition, the World Boxing Organization has confirmed the introduction of gender tests for the World Championships in Liverpool, effective immediately. All female boxers competing from September 4 to 14 in Liverpool will be required to undergo these tests.

The new guideline, developed by a working group consisting of members of the medical department and the anti-doping committee within World Boxing, aims to ensure the safety of all participants and create equal competitive conditions for men and women. The purpose of the guideline is to maintain fairness and promote a level playing field for all athletes.

The IOC recognises World Boxing as a partner for the 2028 games in Los Angeles, with the organisation set to take over the organisation of the boxing tournaments. The status of whether Khelif will undergo the gender test or possibly appeal against the decision is currently unknown.

Experts were consulted during the development of the guideline, with discussions related to the development of the guideline including legal, social, and sporting developments related to the issue of gender eligibility. The gender indicated in the passport is the deciding factor for admission to competitions, according to the IOC.

The IOC has also taken responsibility for organising the boxing tournaments in the 2024 Paris Olympics and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. This decision marks a significant step towards ensuring fairness and equality in the world of boxing.
