Following the Khelif case, the boxing association confirmed the implementation of gender verification tests.
In a significant turn of events, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has taken over the organization of boxing tournaments for the upcoming Paris Summer Games in 2024 and the potential 2028 Games in Los Angeles. This decision comes in response to the suspension of the International Boxing Association (IBA) due to governance, financial, and corruption issues.
The IBA's suspension led to a unique situation in the Paris Games, as two athletes, Imane Khelif and Lin Yu-ting, who had been excluded from the 2023 World Championships due to unexplained gender tests, were allowed to participate in the Paris Games by the IOC. The IOC considered the IBA's decision as "arbitrary" and without proper procedure.
However, a new development has emerged for the World Boxing Championships in Liverpool from September 4th to 14th. The World Boxing Association (WBA) has introduced gender tests for female boxers participating in the event. All female athletes over 18 years old must undergo a PCR test or a functional, medically equivalent genetic screening test to determine their birth gender. The WBA did not specify what consequences would be imposed on athletes who refuse to undergo the gender tests.
The new guideline was developed by a working group consisting of members of the medical department and the anti-doping committee within the WBA. The WBA stated that the new guideline was necessary to maintain fairness and integrity in the sport, and aims to ensure the safety of all participants and create equal competitive conditions for men and women.
The future of Khelif's participation in the gender tests or potential challenge of the decision remains uncertain. The IOC recognizes World Boxing as a partner and is aiming to keep boxing in the Olympic program. World Boxing is set to take over the organization of the boxing tournaments in 2028 in Los Angeles, subject to a final decision by the IOC.
These developments are part of a broader response to legal, social, and sporting developments related to the question of gender eligibility. The IOC is committed to ensuring a level playing field for all athletes, regardless of gender, and will continue to work towards this goal in the organization of boxing competitions.
