Following the footsteps of Corbin Bosch, another PSL player finalizes a substitute agreement with an IPL team.
hePunjab Kings have pulled a surprise by signing uncapped all-rounder Mitch Owen as a replacement for the injured Glenn Maxwell for the rest of IPL 2025. Maxwell sat out Punjab's match against Chennai Super Kings on April 30 due to a rib injury, and it looks like he won't return for the remainder of the tournament.
Owen, who plays domestic cricket for Tasmania, made his mark with a blistering 39-ball ton in the 2024/25 BBL final. The Punjab Kings snapped him up for 3 crores.
With 646 runs from 34 T20s under his belt, Owen boasts the highest strike rate among players who have scored more than 500 runs in T20 cricket. He's also no slouch with the ball, bowling some handy medium pace.
Right now, Owen is playing for Peshawar Zalmi in the ongoing PSL. He's managed 101 runs at a strike rate of 198, but with an average of just 16.83. He's also got two wickets. Zalmi are currently in fifth place, fighting for a spot in the playoffs. They have three league stage matches left - against Multan Sultans, Karachi Kings, and Lahore Qalandars, respectively. The playoffs are scheduled for May 13, 14, 16, and 18.
Punjab, on the other hand, have league matches lined up on May 4 (against Lucknow Super Giants), May 8 (Delhi Capitals), May 11 (Mumbai Indians), and May 16 (Rajasthan Royals). The IPL playoffs are set for May 20, 21, 23, and 25. If the news reports are accurate, Owen will join Punjab after the conclusion of PZ's PSL 2025 season. This means, if PZ don't make it to the PSL playoffs, Owen could be available for Punjab's last two league matches, and possibly the IPL playoffs. Conversely, if PZ qualify for the PSL playoffs, Owen won't be available for any of the remaining PSL matches, but he will be eligible to play in the IPL playoffs (assuming Punjab qualify too).
Corbin Bosch, a previous PSL-contracted player, made headlines when he signed with the Mumbai Indians after Lizaad Williams got injured before IPL 2025. To accept the offer, Bosch had to relinquish his PSL contract and face a one-year ban from the league. It looks like Owen might be able to avoid such a predicament.

Additional Insight: Mitchell Owen has been signed by the Punjab Kings to be available for the rest of IPL 2025, contingent on his obligations to Peshawar Zalmi in PSL 2025. If Zalmi fail to qualify for the PSL playoffs, Owen should be available for Punjab's last two league matches and potentially the IPL playoffs. If Zalmi qualify for the PSL playoffs, Owen will only be available for the IPL playoffs (assuming Punjab qualify too). This scenario appears to be different from Corbin Bosch's experience in IPL 2025, where he had to give up his PSL contract and serve a one-year ban due to conflicts in scheduling.
