Following the departure of Esteban Lepaul, Angers SCO turns to their young attacking talents, such as Prosper Peter, Sidiki Chérif, and Lanroy Machine.
Angers SCO, a Ligue 1 club, has seen promising performances from its young players in the opening games of the 2022-2023 season. One of these rising stars is Sidiki Chérif, a left-footed striker who has shown great potential.
Chérif, described by former teammate and now assistant coach Lamine M'Baye as a "powerful and fast winger," made a significant impact in his first team debut against Rennes on August 31, scoring his first goal for the club. Although he struggled in the first four games of the season, Chérif bounced back with a goal against Rennes and impressive performances against Metz, displaying a keen sense of goal and creating several chances.
Chérif's promising form has earned him a promotion to the first team following Esteban Lepaul's departure. The young striker, who stands at 1.71m tall, is anticipated to make a significant impact as the new number 9. However, a year-long thigh injury has kept Chérif out of action, and it remains to be seen when he will return to full fitness.
Another young player making waves at Angers is Prosper Peter. The 20-year-old, who had only 30 minutes of Ligue 1 experience before his promotion, has been praised for his work ethic and promise as a developing talent. Peter has been used extensively by coach Dujeux in the attack, stretching defenses, repeatedly challenging opponents, and earning admiration from teammates despite the team's mixed early results.
Lanroy Machine is another young player who is part of the Angers attack. Machine, who is also an additional offensive option for the club, has come on in the first four games of the season. Justin Kalumba, a 20-year-old player, could start against Lyon instead of Chérif, who is still recovering from his injury.
Coach Dujeux is managing the balance between exigence and indulgence with the young players. He understands the importance of nurturing their talent while also pushing them to perform at the highest level. M'Baye, who has played a role in the development of Chérif and other young players, agrees that the club's approach is the right one.
Experienced player Jim Allevinah will undergo surgery on his calves, which could see him sidelined for an extended period. The club will need to rely on its young players even more in his absence. With Chérif, Peter, Machine, and Kalumba all showing promise, Angers SCO looks set to have a bright future.
