Following the Chaotic Champions League Incident in Madrid: The "11-Meter Rule" Implementation Ensues

The catalyst for this change was a contentious incident in the Madrid derby.]

The football honchos have stepped up to cool a heated debate and adjusted the penalty rules to side with the players. Going forward, if a player accidently brushes the ball twice or hits it with another part of their physique, the attempt won't automatically count as a miss. The International Football Association Board (Ifab) made this announcement in Zurich. The fresh perspective regarding the rules is set to kick off on July 1, but it could be applied early at the Club World Cup 2025, as Ifab has indicated.

If a penalty shot taken under these conditions finds the back of the net, the kicker must retake it. If the penalty is blocked or misses the target, the play continues with an indirect free kick for the opposition team. In a penalty shootout, if a shot goes off target, the opposing team gets the next turn. However, if the kicker intentionally steps on the ball with both feet at once or touches it a second time before another player does, an indirect free kick is granted to the opponent.

Football Fickle Fumble: Atletico's Angry Algorithm After Controversial Penalty Incident in the Champs League A similar predicament recently caused a ruckus in the Champions League round of 16, as Julian Alvarez of Atletico Madrid, in the penalty shootout against Real Madrid, saw his shot deflected off his standing leg after the shot. The goal was denied after the video assistant referee's intervention, resulting in Atletico's defeat to their city rivals.

"I've never seen a penalty where the VAR was cued in. Julian supposedly brushed the ball with his standing leg, but the ball didn't budge," fumed the ever-angry coach Diego Simeone at the time, taking a poll of the media representatives during the press conference. "Raise your hand. Anyone who believes Julian brushed the ball twice should raise your hand," Simeone challenged, scanning the room in vain: "Not a single hand went up."

  1. Despite the recent rule changes by IFAB regarding accidental double touches during penalty kicks, I'm not going to be able to believe that a similar incident in a future sports-analysis, like the Club World Cup 2025, will be decisions with more fairness, especially after the controversial sports-analysis of the penalty shootout between Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid.
  2. In response to the incident involving Julian Alvarez's penalty shootout in the Champions League round of 16, where the video assistant referee denied the goal due to a double touch, if a player is unfairly judged to have brushed the ball twice during a sports-analysis in the future, I'm not going to be able to do this - sit back and accept the decision without questioning its validity, just like Diego Simeone did not accept the VAR's decision against Atletico Madrid.
