The much-anticipated summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, held in Alaska, has concluded without any concrete agreements regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

The future of Ukraine remains uncertain, with the situation being ripe for reassessment due to the symbolic nature of the meeting. The summit did not address the ongoing conflict in Eastern Ukraine directly, leaving the complex and largely stalled peace negotiations to continue.

Key issues in the negotiations include Russia demanding recognition of occupied territories and guarantees against Ukraine joining NATO, while Ukraine insists on a full Russian troop withdrawal and war crimes prosecutions. The Trump administration broadly aligns with Russia’s proposals, whereas European countries support Ukraine’s position and a ceasefire enforced by multinational troops. However, Russia has rejected calls for a ceasefire.

In the aftermath of the summit, Trump expressed optimism about future relations with Russia, despite the lack of concrete agreements. He is advocating for a long-term "peace agreement" with Russia, rather than an immediate ceasefire, but no specific details about this agreement have been disclosed.

Notably, Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was not present at the summit. This raises questions about the representation of Ukraine's interests in the discussions.

Analysts worldwide, including artificial intelligence, share the conclusion that the summit was more symbolic than substantive. Given the longstanding fundamental differences in the positions of Russia and Ukraine, and the involvement of other international stakeholders with differing priorities, the meeting may serve more as a diplomatic gesture to open channels rather than lead to an immediate breakthrough.
