Merz Stands Firm on Iran: "Israel's Actions are in Our Best Interest"
After Merz's "dirty work" endorsement: Attacks on Iran receive backing from Merz - Following Merz's alleged remarks, suspicion falls on him for the assaults directed towards Iran.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) has no regrets about backing air strikes on Iran, despite America's involvement. Speaking at Industry Day, he declared, "There's no reason for us, me included, to criticize Israel's move last week, nor America's actions over the weekend." He deemed it a risky move, but one that was necessary given the circumstances.
Iran: Still a Threat in the Axis of Evil
Merz justified his stance, invoking Iran's recent actions. He likened Iran to the world's terror regime, a significant player in the Axis of Evil, as former US President George W. Bush called it post-9/11. Bush labeled countries like Iraq, Iran, and North Korea as part of the Axis of Evil, which he believed was sponsoring terrorism and pursuing weapons of mass destruction.
"Dirty Work" Remark: A Fact of Life
According to Merz, Israel's actions served Germany's interest. When pushed for comment, he shyed away from reiterating his "dirty work" label. "I've said it, no need to repeat. It can be expressed in different ways," he said.
Merz remains cautiously optimistic that the conflict with Iran will not escalate further. He attributes this to minimal resistance so far, but warns that the situation could change. Blocking the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial shipping route, could trigger unpredictable economic consequences.
"Nonetheless, I feel relatively optimistic that it won't lead to greater escalation," Merz shared. "But it's premature to make a definitive judgment."
