Julian Weber's Epic Night in Doha

Following Mega-Wurf incident, Julian Weber remains mystified about the turn of events.

German javelin thrower, Julian Weber, had a night to remember when he burst through the 90-meter barrier in Doha. "I can't bloody believe it, mate! I reckon I need a bloody rewatch. Blimey, I felt bloody fantastic," Weber exclaimed after his sensational performance. The Mainz native became the seventh German to breach the 90-meter mark with a world-leading throw of 91.06 meters.

"It was bloody perfect with the winning toss in the final round. The wind here in Doha is cracking for us javelin throwers. If ya hit the right angle, the javelin just sails, innit?" Weber said after his stunning start to the World Championships. Weber already bettered his three-year-old personal best with a throw of 89.84 meters in the fifth round, before snatching the win from Neeraj Chopra's 90.23 meters with his triumphant throw in the last round.

Always the Unlucky Fourth, No More

Weber, whose best throw was 89.54 meters from 2022, has had a rough trot recently. "The last few weeks have been bloody shit, to be honest. But I know I've still got potential. If I train well, I reckon there's a lot more where this bloody performance came from," he said, looking ahead to the rest of the season with optimism.

The former European champion narrowly missed the podium as the unlucky fourth at the World Championships in 2022 and 2023, as well as at the Olympics in Tokyo and Paris. This year's World Championships in Tokyo (September 13-21) could finally end Weber's curse.

His extraordinary throw in Doha landed him fifth place in the DLV's all-time best list. The Suhaim bin Hamad Stadium in Doha has been a prosperous hunting ground for German javelin throwers. Eight years ago, Rio Olympic champion Thomas Röhler sent the javelin 93.90 meters flying there. The German record of 97.76 meters, set by Johannes Vetter five years ago in Chorzow, Poland, still stands.
