In a surprising turn of events, former New York Governor David Paterson has announced his support for Mayor Eric Adams' re-election bid. This endorsement marks a change from Paterson's previous support for former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary.

Paterson, the first Black governor of New York and a fixture of Harlem politics, praised Adams as an individual who is dynamic, articulate, receptive, courageous, and outspoken. He also suggested that Adams "is taking no prisoners," implying a strong and aggressive approach.

The Siena poll released this week shows a two-man race between Zohran Mamdani and Cuomo, with Mamdani leading with 44% support and Cuomo having 25%. However, the search results do not provide specific information on which high-ranking Democrats have endorsed Adams or the impact of such endorsements on Mamdani's presidential campaign.

Mayor Adams, currently in fourth place, has been unable to secure critical matching funds due to ongoing questions related to the corruption indictment against him. The indictment involved campaign finance and bribery charges, which have since been dismissed. Despite this, Adams has remained resilient, avoiding becoming a prisoner himself.

Adams stated that there is still much of their story to tell. He believes that Paterson's endorsement could offer a jolt to his campaign. If one of the other candidates were to drop out, according to Paterson, Adams would likely win.

On Tuesday, Paterson likened Mamdani's candidacy to a "forest fire" and said he did not believe Mamdani would be able to pay for his proposals, which include free buses and universal child care. He suggested that for Adams to have a shot, the anti-Mamdani candidates may need to unite.

Republican Curtis Sliwa is in third place with 12% support. The latest Siena poll shows Adams with 7% support. A spokesperson for Cuomo's campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Paterson also mentioned a consolidation proposal in which all candidates would pledge to support whoever led in the polls, but stated that none of the candidates seem particularly interested, making the issue moot. As the race heats up, it remains to be seen how these endorsements and proposals will impact the New York City mayoral race.
