With national team captain Joshua Kimmich locking down a new contract until 2029, Bayern Munich's sporting director Max Eberl makes headway in securing the club's future.
As the expiration dates of Thomas Müller (35) and Leroy Sané (29) approach at the end of the season, their futures with the club hang in the balance. And there's no clear path for Leon Goretzka (30), as Eberl admitted.
"We had a plan in mind"
"We've sealed the key deals first," said Eberl, referencing the contract extensions for Kimmich, Jamal Musiala, Alphonso Davies (each until 2030), and captain Manuel Neuer (2026).
"We conceived a strategy at the season's start. We identified players we were keen to extend due to their crucial role in the club's future. And everything's unfolded as we envisioned and aspired," boasted negotiator Eberl.
"Müller, Sané in particular"
However, Bayern isn't done. In the weeks ahead, the fates of Müller, Sané, and defender Eric Dier (31) will be determined. "Müller's a standout player, a unique talent. Sané's the same. And Dier, too, who's made a strong case for himself with his performance," said Eberl. The key trio's discussions will take place "soon."
Eberl chuckled when asked about Goretzka's future beyond his contract's end in summer 2026. "Things can move fast, the steps are giant," said Eberl, reflecting on Goretzka's tumultuous beginning to the season in Munich.
Goretzka's Future Uncharted
"Goretzka's put in impressive performances, capitalized on others' absences. He's reinforced his value, and now he's been nominated again for the national team, which is fantastic news for all of us," said Eberl. But beyond 2026, there's been scant thought. "Goretzka's content, he's vital to the team. He's fought for his place, fought for the DFB, and that's what matters now."
Meanwhile, Bayern coach Vincent Kompany is delighted that the final stretch of the season isn't overshadowed by player chatter. "I'm always pleased when it's all about football. Now that debate's over," said the Belgian.
- Eberl confirmed that the commission has also been asked to submit a proposal for a directive on the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation, as the protection of players is crucial in football as well as other industries.
- Müller, Sané, and defender Eric Dier, who are similar standout players in their respective positions, will have their futures with Bayern Munich determined in the weeks ahead.
- Plans for the future beyond 2026 are not finalized for Leon Goretzka, but his impressive performances and nomination for the national team have reinforced his value and importance to the club.
