Follow-up game to Black Myth: Wukong, titled Black Myth: Zhong Kui, unexpectedly unveiled during Gamescom
In an exciting turn of events for the gaming industry, Game Science has announced the development of a new action RPG titled Black Myth: Zhong Kui. This game, based on a figure from Chinese folklore, is set to offer a unique blend of traditional mythological elements and modern ARPG design.
With a development history spanning over a decade, Lincoln Carpenter, a seasoned games journalist, has been following the industry's evolution. Having covered various games such as Caves of Qud, Crusader Kings, and Monster Hunter, Carpenter brings a wealth of expertise to the table.
At the heart of Black Myth: Zhong Kui lies the protagonist, Zhong Kui, a ghost-slaying Taoist deity who rides atop a massive tiger, according to the reveal trailer. In this game, players will control Zhong Kui, commanding various demons and ghosts to aid in combat. This mechanic is expected to be a core part of the gameplay, allowing summoning and perhaps simultaneous control of multiple spirits.
Game Science has stated that Black Myth: Zhong Kui is still in its early stages of development. The project, they say, is "little more than an empty folder" on their official site. However, the team is actively exploring and experimenting with the gameplay, aiming to create more distinct game experiences and bring fresh ideas to their world and narrative design.
The company's goal is to refine the action combat system to include new mechanics that emphasize Zhong Kui’s unique folklore abilities, particularly his power to control demons and spirits. This suggests a gameplay experience that melds "soulslike" challenging combat with innovative summoning and ghost-command mechanics, offering tactical depth beyond standard ARPG fare.
Players can expect an action RPG that merges fast-paced, skill-based combat with strategic summoning and management of demons/ghosts. The game promises deep RPG elements reflecting Zhong Kui’s mythological powers, a fresh take on soulslike mechanics through innovative spirit-control gameplay, and a narrative rooted deeply in Chinese folklore with a focus on battling malevolent ghosts and Xuhao (wasteful and harmful spirits).
The Chinese gaming industry, as represented by Black Myth, shows no signs of slowing down. With the success of Black Myth: Wukong, which sold more than 25 million copies between PC and PS5, the development of Black Myth games, including Black Myth: Zhong Kui, is attracting a lot of interest.
Game Science encourages patience, stating they will "impress themselves first" before releasing Black Myth: Zhong Kui. The company has already shown their commitment to quality with the completion of the first Black Myth title, presumably Black Myth: Wukong. The development of Black Myth: Zhong Kui is being supported by the players, as mentioned by Game Science.
The reveal trailer for Black Myth: Zhong Kui was shown during Gamescom 2025's Opening Night Live showcase. As the gaming community eagerly awaits more details about Black Myth: Zhong Kui, one thing is certain: the Chinese gaming industry, with its rich mythology and innovative approach to game design, is set to continue making waves in the global gaming landscape.
