Preventing Pickpocketing in Public Spaces: Tips from North Rhine-Westphalia's Minister of the Interior

Pickpocketing remains a prevalent issue in public spaces, with many cases going unreported due to victims not noticing the crime immediately. According to the latest statistics, North Rhine-Westphalia reported 37,321 cases of pocket picking in 2022, a significant increase from the 27,577 cases reported in 2021 [1].

To combat this rise in pickpocketing, Herbert Reul, the Minister of the Interior in North Rhine-Westphalia, has offered some effective strategies to help citizens stay safe.

  1. Carry only as much cash as you need. Limiting the amount of cash you carry can minimize the potential loss in case of a theft.
  2. Keep money, payment cards, and important documents in multiple closed inside pockets, as close to your body as possible. By distributing your valuables across various pockets, you make it more difficult for pickpockets to access them all at once.
  3. Hold handbags or shoulder bags with the closed side facing your body. This simple action can prevent easy access to your belongings for potential thieves.
  4. Keep all bags closed at all times. Always ensure your bags are zipped or fastened to keep your belongings secure.
  5. Never leave your handbag or jacket unattended. Even for a moment, an unattended bag can provide an opportunity for a pickpocket.
  6. Be extra vigilant with your valuables in crowded places. Pickpockets often thrive in busy areas, so it's essential to keep a close eye on your belongings in such environments.
  7. Use a money belt, a belt pouch, a money belt, or a wallet chained to your belt. These accessories can help keep your valuables close to your body and secure.
  8. Do not place wallets on top of shopping bags, shopping carts, or shopping baskets. Instead, carry them as close to your body as possible.
  9. Do not hang handbags on chair backs or leave them unattended in restaurants, shops, or changing rooms. Even when trying on shoes or clothes, it's crucial to keep your bag with you at all times.
  10. Recognize pickpockets. Pickpockets often have a typically searching gaze, avoiding direct eye contact with the victim and looking more at the loot.

Minister Reul also emphasized the importance of reporting pickpocketing incidents to the nearest police station or calling 110 as soon as possible. He also wrote the warning "Pickpockets" on the asphalt in Düsseldorf's old town on Monday, September 25th, as a reminder for citizens to stay alert and keep an eye on their bags.

By following these tips, you can help minimize the risk of theft and make it harder for pickpockets to access your belongings.
