Focus shifted towards Aso's candidacy as Kishida supports him in the LDP election
The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) of Japan is set to hold its presidential election on October 4, and the race is heating up as candidates scramble to secure the support of former prime ministers Taro Aso and Fumio Kishida.
On Thursday, two frontrunners in the election, Sanae Takaichi and Shinjiro Koizumi, visited Taro Aso's office to report their candidacies. Takaichi's visit marks the first time a candidate has reported their candidacy to Aso.
The meetings between the candidates and Aso are part of the candidates' efforts to secure his support. Aso, who is the party's supreme advisor, is reportedly advising Takaichi on policy. However, Aso has not yet clarified his preferred candidate in the election.
Koizumi, the grandson of former prime minister Junichiro Koizumi, did not disclose details about his meeting with Aso.
The candidates in the election are Taro Aso and Fumio Kishida, but both have not yet clarified their preferred candidates in the election. Despite this, the candidates are seeking the support of both former prime ministers.
The outcome of the election will determine the successor to outgoing Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. The election is attracting attention due to the influence of Taro Aso and Fumio Kishida, who have the power to influence the votes of several dozen LDP lawmakers.
If the election goes to a runoff, candidates are rushing to meet with both Aso and Kishida. During her meeting with Aso, Takaichi was urged to be "cheerful and energetic."
The election of the party president will take place on September 20, and the LDP presidential election on October 4 will be closely watched as it will determine the future direction of Japan's government.
