Focus of Vanity Fair to Shift Towards Primary Sectors such as Hollywood, with Reduced Emphasis on Certain Coverage, According to the New Editorial Director

Mark Guiducci, the new global editorial director of Vanity Fair, is shaking up the publication with a fresh editorial strategy that aims to refocus its coverage on entertainment, celebrities, culture, money, politics, and style. This shift marks a departure from specialized verticals and certain types of coverage, such as news aggregation, reviews, and trade reporting, which will be scaled back.

In line with this new direction, Vanity Fair is phasing out specialized sections like The Hive (business, politics, technology) and Hollywood Daily. Instead, every story will be treated as a Vanity Fair story without vertical labels.

Key Changes at Vanity Fair

Staffing Changes

As part of this transformation, Vanity Fair is hiring 13 new staff members, including three new correspondents dedicated to Hollywood, Washington, and style beats. Unfortunately, some existing staff, such as chief critic Richard Lawson and Hollywood correspondent David Canfield, have been let go.

Rebuilding the Editorial Identity

Guiducci is also dismantling the siloed vertical editorial structure to rebuild a unified editorial identity for the magazine and website. This restructuring is expected to simplify the editorial structure and strengthen staff in key beats aligned with entertainment, politics, culture, and style.

A Holistic Approach

The publication is likely updating its design and approach to storytelling to align with this new integrated editorial direction. Daniel Kile, who will become VP, Global Content Strategy, will oversee video, social, operations, audience development, and events teams, working closely with departments across the building, from Revenue to Product and Technology.

International Expansion

Daniel Kile will also collaborate with Simone Marchetti and the global HOEC as they look to grow Vanity Fair internationally.

Design Overhaul

Guiducci is already putting his stamp on Vanity Fair, as evidenced by his redesign of the magazine for the Hollywood Issue. This redesign will influence the look of Vanity Fair on every platform.

Mark Guiducci, who previously served as creative editorial director at sister publication Vogue, started as Vanity Fair's global editorial director on June 30. Under his leadership, Vanity Fair is set to sharpen its focus on its most iconic and influential coverage areas, creating a more holistic, brand-centric editorial vision.
