Chicago Sky-Indiana Fever Game: WNBA Investigation Unable to Substantiate Alleged Racist Fan Behavior

A WNBA investigation into allegations of racist fan behavior targeting Chicago Sky's Angel Reese during a game against the Indiana Fever on May 17 couldn't find concrete evidence to support the claims. It's unknown who made the initial allegations.

The league began its probe in response to reports suggesting a spectator made racial comments towards Reese. The investigation involved gathering information from fans, team, and arena staff, as well as reviewing audiovisual evidence from the game.

Despite extensive research, the WNBA declared that it could not corroborate these allegations. The league stated in a Tuesday statement that it remains committed to fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment for all, and will relentlessly enforce its fan code of conduct.

Reese and the Sky have been tight-lipped about the matter. Before the Sky's May 24 match against the Phoenix Mercury, Reese stated her focus was solely on her team's performance, commenting that she aimed to help the team secure its first win of the season. Her coach, Tyler Marsh, echoed this sentiment, expressing appreciation for the WNBA's investigation and hoping for continued measures to secure a safe environment for everyone.

The Sky, despite Reese's historic 500-point, 500-rebound feat in just 38 career games, ultimately lost to the Mercury 94-89, dropping to 0-4 on the season.

During the third quarter of the initial game, Reese appeared visibly upset after Fever star Caitlin Clark committed a flagrant 1 foul on her. However, following the game, Reese referred to Clark's actions as a basketball play, and commended the referees for their decisions. Clark, for her part, stated she didn't intended to act maliciously.

Reese's organization and herself initially made the allegations. Her claims generated widespread support from across the league, underscored by the league's proactive stance against hate incidents at WNBA events[1].

No specific fan or group has come forward regarding the allegations.

Meanwhile, the Fever announced on Monday that Caitlin Clark would be sidelined for at least two weeks due to a left quad strain[3].
