Flyers' goalie Carter Hart will not return.
After a tumultuous period of over a year, five players, including Carter Hart, who were previously cleared of sexual assault charges, are now eligible to sign new contracts and return to play in the NHL.
The five players, Michael McLeod, Dillon Dube, Cal Foote, Alex Formenton, and Carter Hart, were found not guilty of the charges in London, Ontario in 2021. Following this verdict, the Canadian government informed the players' lawyers last month that it would not challenge the verdict.
Carter Hart, who was the Flyers' goaltender of the future when he joined the organization in 2018, had his tenure with the team end abruptly in January 2024 following the filing of criminal charges. However, Hart has ruled out returning to the Philadelphia Flyers and is looking for a fresh start with a different NHL team.
Hart won 96 games and recorded six shutouts during his time with the Flyers. Daniel Brière, the general manager of the Philadelphia Flyers, confirmed that Hart will not be wearing the orange jersey again.
Interestingly, none of the targeted players, including Carter Hart, are currently under contract. Michael McLeod was playing with the New Jersey Devils, Dillon Dube was with the Calgary Flames, and Alex Formenton was in Europe at the time their contracts expired. All the targeted players, including Hart, are unrestricted free agents.
The NHL has lifted the suspensions of Hart and the four other players, making them eligible to sign new contracts as of October 15 and return to play as of December 1. This decision came seven weeks after the players were found not guilty by a judge in London, Ontario.
Daniel Brière, the general manager of the Philadelphia Flyers, stated that Hart's agent, Judd Moldaver, informed him that Hart felt it would be best to start fresh in light of the past year and a half. The specific team Hart will sign with has not been announced yet.
This development marks a significant turn of events for the five players, who were initially faced with serious allegations. With their eligibility to return to the NHL, they now have the opportunity to restart their careers and prove their worth on the ice.
