Fluminense thwarts BVB in a frustrating World Cup opening encounter
Football Fans Gather in East Rutherford for Club World Cup Clash
It's a new world for Borussia Dortmund, as they faced off against Fluminense in the Club World Cup in the USA. The atmosphere was electric, but some fans might have missed the peculiar pre-match show. The players were called one-by-one to the pitch, much like gladiators, and the crowd was whipped into a frenzy with shouts of "Heja BVB" over the loudspeakers. But the real action happened outside before kick-off, where fans gathered on the large parking lots, grilling and downing beers in anticipation.

Soccer has finally landed in the Land of the Free, and BVB is at the forefront. But there's progress to be made. In the inaugural Group Stage game of the 2025 Club World Cup, Dortmund ended up tied with Brazilian champions Fluminense, after a 0-0 scoreline on Tuesday afternoon local time. A powerful strike from Niklas Süle mere moments before the final whistle couldn't change that.
Lineup Shake-up for BVB
The 34,736 spectators that packed the MetLife Stadium were treated to the expected starting lineup from the Bundesliga season finale, with Marcel Sabitzer surprisingly preferred over Felix Nmecha in central midfield.
The BVB team struggled to find their footing, hoping to avoid Fluminense's aggressive style of play. The Brazilians took the first shots of the game, with Dortmund trying to capitalize on any opportunities to get behind Fluminense's defense, anchored by 40-year-old legendary defender Thiago Silva.
BVB's Left Defensive Side Under Threat
Karim Adeyemi skillfully slipped by Juan Freytes to carve out Dortmund's best chance of the game, crossings from the left wing falling just out of reach of Central Striker Serhou Guirassy. Despite the better side, Fluminense couldn't convert their dominance into scoring chances. A notable weak point was Dortmund's left-hand defensive side, as Ramy Bensebaini often had to be cautious after receiving a yellow card in the second minute.
The second half was just as challenging, with Dortmund doing what they could to survive. BVB coach Niko Kovac made first-time debutant Jobe Bellingham's entrance after the hour mark. Sabitzer's shot in the 65th minute breathed some life into Dortmund, but it wasn't nearly enough to turn the tide. Kobel saved Dortmund from defeat by thwarting Everaldo and Nonato in quick succession, keeping the goose egg on the scoreboard.
What's Next for BVB?
With a desperately needed win against Mamelodi Sundowns (South Africa) looming on Saturday (6 PM GMT/Sat1 and Dazn), BVB will have to dig deep and find a way to shake off their sluggish performance against Fluminense. Hang on tight for an exciting battle in the Club World Cup!
