Florida Quarterback DJ Lagway is engaged in intense daily pass-throwing practice, even while nursing a strained calf muscle.
Florida Gators Quarterback DJ Lagway Makes Progress in Recovery
Florida Gators quarterback DJ Lagway is making significant strides in his recovery from a calf injury that limited him during fall camp. As of mid-August 2025, he has taken part in full team reps in 11-on-11 practice for the first time since camp began, showing noticeable progress and feeling much better, according to head coach Billy Napier.
Lagway's recovery comes after managing earlier offseason shoulder and hernia injuries, which restricted his throwing and live practice sessions. Despite these setbacks, he has been throwing 70 passes a day as part of his rehabilitation.
The backup quarterback competition at the University of Florida is ongoing, with no clear starter beyond Lagway publicly highlighted. However, Napier is optimistic that Lagway will fully return by the end of August, indicating a likely competition for backup roles until then.
Napier has praised Lagway's arm talent, accuracy, and intelligence, but has also highlighted areas for improvement, including operating quicker, processing quicker, communicating better under pressure, and managing problems as they arise.
Tramell Jones Jr., another quarterback on the team, has impressed Napier to the point of challenging returner Aidan Warner and college journeyman Harrison Bailey for the backup job. Napier described Jones' performance as "buzz worthy."
The Gators football team, ranked 15th, is set to open the season on August 30 against Long Island University. Despite the ongoing quarterback competition and Lagway's injury history, the team is optimistic about the upcoming season.
