Freiburg Extends Contract with Goalkeeper and Cup Hero Müller - Florian Müller's redemption arc leads Freiburg to DFB-Pokal semifinals

SC Freiburg goalkeeper Florian Müller has turned his career around with a string of standout performances this season. Once criticised for shaky starts at VfB Stuttgart, the 28-year-old has now earned a new contract and praise for his consistency. His heroics in the DFB-Pokal quarterfinal against Hertha BSC have set the stage for a reunion with his former club in the semifinals.

Müller's journey at Freiburg began after a difficult spell at Stuttgart, where fans labelled him with nicknames like Fliegenfänger and Flutschfinger Flo. But under coach Julian Schuster, his form has improved dramatically. A standout display against Darmstadt, described as a super Spiel, marked the start of his resurgence.

In the DFB-Pokal quarterfinal, Müller became the hero in a penalty shootout against Hertha BSC. His two crucial saves secured Freiburg's place in the next round. Sporting director Klemens Hartenbach later highlighted Müller's character and shot-stopping ability, calling him a very good goalkeeper.

Now, with 47 competitive appearances for Freiburg, Müller has extended his stay at the club. His next challenge will be facing Stuttgart—the team he left behind—in the DFB-Pokal semifinal.

Hartenbach's praise reflects the trust Müller has rebuilt. Strong training performances and match-winning displays have replaced past doubts, proving his growth since those early struggles.

Müller's contract extension and semifinal clash with Stuttgart cap a remarkable turnaround. His penalty saves and consistent form have made him a key figure for Freiburg. The upcoming match will test whether his progress can continue against his former side.
