Flooded Street: Buses May Not Run as Usual - Floods paralyze northern Germany as schools reopen on Monday

Heavy flooding has disrupted travel and daily life across Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania over the weekend. Firefighters responded to swamped basements and blocked roads, with Rostock, Vorpommern-Rügen, and Mecklenburgische Seenplatte among the worst-affected areas. No injuries have been reported so far.

The flooding follows days of thawing combined with persistent rain. By Saturday, several federal and state roads were either closed or reduced to single-lane traffic. The B197 federal highway near Friedland has remained shut since then, with authorities warning it may stay closed until at least Monday.

Public transport has also taken a hit. Verkehrsgesellschaft Vorpommern-Rügen (VVR) issued warnings about possible bus cancellations, particularly in parts of Rügen Island, Bad Sülze, Tribsees, and Stralsund. With students returning to school on Monday, parents have been advised to accompany their children to bus stops in case of last-minute service changes.

The German Weather Service (Deutscher Wetterdienst) predicts more grey, rainy weather for the northeast at the start of the week. While no school closures have been reported in Rügen, Bad Sülze, or Stralsund, other regions like Lower Saxony faced freezing rain and black ice warnings on February 5, 2026, leading to shutdowns there.

Emergency crews continue to monitor the situation as water levels remain high. Commuters and parents are urged to check for updates on road and bus services before travelling. Schools in the affected districts are set to open as usual on Monday, though transport delays may still occur.
