Nigeria Weather Update: Flood Warnings and Rainfall Forecasts Across the Country
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather alert for the period of August 2025, predicting thunderstorms and rainfall across various regions in Nigeria, with a high possibility of flooding in certain states.
According to NiMet's forecasts, the flood-prone states in the northern region include Adamawa, Taraba, Benue, Bauchi, Kebbi, Zamfara, Sokoto, Gombe, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Yobe, and Borno. Particularly high flood risk is reported in Adamawa, Taraba, Benue, Zamfara, Sokoto, Gombe, Bauchi, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, and Taraba states.
In the central region, the states of Benue and Plateau are notably high risk, with Benue and Plateau, Nasarawa, Niger, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Kwara, and Kogi being highlighted as flood-prone areas.
The southern region is also at risk, with Delta, Imo, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom states identified as having high flood risk, especially during periods of continuous and heavy rainfall.
On Monday, the northern regions can expect morning thunderstorms, with moderate rains in parts of Sokoto, Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba states. Cloudy skies with intermittent light rains are expected on Monday morning in Ebonyi, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom. Later in the day, moderate rains are expected in Enugu, Edo, Ebonyi, Ekiti, Osun, Abia, Cross River, Rivers, Delta, and Akwa Ibom.
On Tuesday morning, thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected in Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe, Taraba, Adamawa, Katsina, and Kaduna. Later in the day, thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected in Bauchi, Borno, Kaduna, Kano, Jigawa, Taraba, and Adamawa.
For Wednesday, NiMet anticipates morning thunderstorms in Bauchi, Adamawa, Taraba, Kebbi, Sokoto, and Zamfara, spreading across the entire North later in the day. In the central region on Wednesday, morning light rains are forecast for FCT, Niger, Nasarawa, Plateau, Benue, and Kogi, followed by thunderstorms later in the day. The central states - Kwara, Niger, Kogi, and Plateau - will have morning light rains and thunderstorms in the afternoon on Wednesday.
The South will experience light morning rains in Enugu, Ebonyi, Oyo, Osun, Ogun, Edo, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Delta, and Bayelsa, with continuous rainfall later on Wednesday.
NiMet has advised residents to fasten loose objects to avoid accidents during the storms, activate emergency response systems, take necessary precautions due to these elevated flood risks, disconnect electrical appliances during storms, and avoid tall trees to prevent injuries from falling branches. Vulnerable persons are also advised to wear warm clothing due to low night temperatures.
Airline operators have been urged to obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet for flight planning. NiMet has also warned of a high possibility of flooding in Katsina, Kebbi, Zamfara, and Sokoto during the forecast period.
