In the picturesque town of Saarde, Estonia, the situation along the Reiu River has taken a turn for the worse. The water level at the Laadi hydrometric station in Pärnu County has surged by over a meter in just four days, reaching an all-time record of 220 cm by July 15, 2025. This unprecedented rise surpasses the previous high of 149 cm recorded in 2020, although the highest ever this year was 282 cm in January.

The catchment area of the Reiu River, located in the lower part of Estonia, is home to numerous marshy zones and lake systems, which have become saturated due to the relentless rainfall. With more rain expected, the water level could potentially rise another 30-40 cm, reaching as high as 250-260 cm.

The river has already overflowed its banks in Surju and further upstream in the southern part of Saarde Municipality, posing a significant threat to smaller local roads and causing flooding in the area. The flooding has worsened in recent days, leading the municipality to issue warnings urging residents near the river to remain vigilant, monitor the situation closely, and prepare for possible assistance if needed.

In case of danger or need for assistance, residents are advised to contact emergency services on 112 or the municipality directly. The municipality is actively monitoring the situation and is prepared to offer support as needed.

The rising waters in the Reiu River have caused significant disruption, threatening infrastructure and endangering homes. However, the spirit of the community remains strong, with residents banding together to help one another and support each other during this challenging time.

As the water levels continue to rise, the people of Saarde Municipality remain hopeful that the situation will improve soon. In the meantime, they are urged to stay vigilant and to take all necessary precautions to ensure their safety and the safety of their loved ones.
