Heavy Rainfall Warnings Across Northeastern France and Centre-Val-de-Loire

After a brief respite following the recent heatwave, France is bracing for another round of rainfall, with several regions under weather alerts. Météo France has issued warnings for heavy rain and potential flooding in low-lying areas, particularly in the Nièvre department, where up to 70 mm of rain is expected in some areas over the next 12 hours.

Eleven departments in northeastern France and the Centre-Val-de-Loire region are on orange alert for rain and flooding from 9 am Wednesday. These include Nièvre, Yonne, Doubs, Haute-Saône, Territoire-de-Belfort, Vosges, Haut-Rhin, Loiret, Eure-et-Loir, Loir-et-Cher, and Cher. The rain episode in the western part of the Nièvre department is expected to continue for another 12 hours, with rainfall amounts of up to 50 to 70 mm predicted in just 12 hours, locally more. In the western part of the department, it has already rained between 20 and 40 mm in just 6 hours.

The rainfall warning is specifically for the low-lying areas in the Nièvre department, with Météo France warning of the potential for runoff and flooding in these areas. The Grand-Est and Franche-Comté regions could receive residual light rain until Thursday afternoon. The rain episode in the Centre-Val-de-Loire region and the west of Burgundy is expected to end Wednesday evening.

Meanwhile, temperatures in Montpellier and Ajaccio are predicted to reach 29 degrees and 35 degrees respectively in the next few hours. The heatwave, which had been a recent memory in France, now seems to be a thing of the past.

It's worth noting that previous severe localized weather events causing floods and landslides occurred in regions like Rauris and Mittersill in Salzburg in August 2023. While these regions are not explicitly mentioned in the current weather alerts, they serve as a reminder of areas that could potentially be vulnerable to such warnings.

Residents in the affected areas are advised to stay informed and take necessary precautions as the situation develops.
