Flood Hazards Persist in Germany's Regions

The ongoing rainfall has kept several regions of Germany on high flood alert due to oversaturated soils. The German Weather Service (DWD) has issued continual warnings, particularly for the western low mountain ranges and the Upper Harz, with the potential for heavy thaw in the Erzgebirge.

Windehausen, a town located in the Nordhausen district of Northern Thuringia, currently experiences high flood risk levels. Local authorities have been mobilized, and residents are urged to stay cautious as the situation remains concerning.

City under Siege: Heringen's Plight

The nearby settlement of Heringen, which houses around 500 inhabitants, has faced substantial flood challenges. Mayor Matthias Marquardt, representing the Left Party, described the situation as “extremely threatening.” Heringen's flood scenario became so critical that the entire district required evacuation on Christmas Day.

Access to electricity, roads, and landline telephony was lost, and the functioning of toilets was compromised due to the lack of proper drainage. The mayor stressed that residents would not be forcibly removed from their homes, but they were strongly advised to leave for their own safety. Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow (Left Party) was present at the site to observe the situation and offer support to those affected.

Disruptions to Rail Traffic Across Germany

The heavy precipitation has led to major disruptions in rail traffic. The line between Hanover and Magdeburg is expected to remain impacted until December 27. IC trains are being diverted due to track damage, resulting in approximately 30 minutes of delay for passengers.

Beyond Nordhausen district in Thuringia, other parts of South Saxony-Anhalt and Saxony have experienced hardships caused by the floods. The situation remained tense, with reports of a 45-year-old woman in Frankenberg (Central Saxony district) being successfully rescued from her stuck vehicle by the local fire department.

Lower Saxony remains on high alert, with storm surges threatening key coastal cities, such as Bremen, Bremerhaven, Elsfleth, Brake, and Rechtenfleth on the Weser, and Wilhelmshaven on the North Sea. Hundreds of volunteer firefighters have been deployed to secure the safety of dykes and residential areas from potential flood damage. In Celle, a nursing home was evacuated as a preventative measure.

Environment Minister Oliver Krischer (Green Party) emphasized the need for continued vigilance in North Rhine-Westphalia, which faces a substantial flood risk. Data from the State Agency for Nature, Environment, and Consumer Protection (Lanuv) reports significant flooding in the Weser tributaries in eastern North Rhine-Westphalia. Meanwhile, Rhineland-Palatinate has seen noticeable improvement in its flood control situation.
