In Blatten, Switzerland, authorities are addressing a critical and destructive situation following a glacier collapse on Wednesday. Around 3 to 3.5 million cubic meters of ice, rock, and debris cascaded into the village, burying approximately 90% of it under as much as 200 meters of rubble.

The landslide blocked the Lonza River, causing it to dam and form a lake, inundating additional structures not initially affected by the landslide. The village, home to about 300 residents, had been evacuated several days prior, averting casualties, though one 64-year-old resident remains missing and unaccounted for amid the hazardous conditions.

The disaster resulted in extensive devastation, with over 130 buildings destroyed, including key structures such as the village church. Local authorities have requested pumps and equipment to clear debris and manage the flooding, but the recovery process is expected to take several years due to the scale of destruction. Mayor Matthias Bellwald emphasized resilience despite the loss: "We lost our village but not our lives... We will stand together and rebuild."

Two nearby villages are now seriously threatened by similar hazards due to the blockage of the Lonza River and the resulting lake. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation but face a long-term challenge. The event underscores the potential for additional collapses or related disasters in the near term, highlighting accelerating environmental changes in alpine regions.

The collapse was triggered by the partial collapse of the Birch Glacier in the Lötschental valley. Prior to the collapse, significant rockfalls had increased the glacier's velocity substantially, with the glacier tongue advancing up to 10 meters per day, contributing to instability. Artificial intervention ideas like blasting the glacier were considered but deemed unfeasible. Continued minor rockfalls and seismic activity were recorded leading up to the collapse, indicating an unstable glacier environment prone to further events.

In August 2017, a massive rockslide in the Swiss canton of Graubünden resulted in eight hikers' deaths. A similar incident could not be ruled out, emphasizing the need for vigilant monitoring and robust efforts to mitigate further impacts.
