Russia Resumes Domestic Flights to Krasnodar

After more than three years of closure, Krasnodar airport in southern Russia has reopened, marking another step in the gradual return to normalcy following the country's military campaign in Ukraine.

The reopening flight, operated by Russian flag carrier Aeroflot, took approximately 3-1/2 hours with an 183-seat Airbus A321. Krasnodar, a city with over 1.5 million people, was the destination of the historic flight.

The decision to resume flights to Krasnodar was based on a risk evaluation by a working group at Rosaviatsiya, the Russian Federal Air Transport Agency. Safe flight routes were established to ensure the safety of passengers.

Krasnodar is the third of six Russian cities, including Saint-Petersburg, to reopen for Aeroflot services, following Elista in May 2024 and Gelendzhik in July 2025. The regional airports Elista and Gelendzhik were closed before Krasnodar due to security reasons related to the Russian military action in Ukraine starting in February 2022; both airports were reopened later.

The new route for flights to Krasnodar will add approximately 90 minutes to the travel time compared to before the war. Flights to Krasnodar now avoid the airspace near the front line in Ukraine.

The reopening of Krasnodar airport will not affect the previously established flight avoidance of airspace near the front line in Ukraine. Eleven major airports in Russia's southern and western regions were closed following the start of Russia's military campaign in Ukraine in February 2022.

Russia resumed regular domestic passenger flights to Krasnodar on Wednesday, marking a significant milestone in the country's efforts to restore normalcy. Aeroflot will operate up to five flights a day from Moscow to Krasnodar. The airport in Krasnodar is ready to welcome passengers once again, providing a much-needed connection for the region.
