Flight Passenger Manages to Escape Handcuffs Mid-Air Amidst Unrest
A Breeze Airways flight from Norfolk, Virginia, to Los Angeles was diverted to Grand Junction, Colorado, on August 13, 2025, following an incident involving an intoxicated male passenger. The passenger, identified as David L., became agitated, yelled racial slurs at airline staff, and engaged in physical altercations with passengers and flight attendants.
The disruptive behaviour of the passenger included waving a skateboard aggressively and shouting obscenities. Despite being restrained twice by the flight crew, the passenger managed to free himself both times. Minor injuries were reported to one flight attendant and one passenger by the airline, though police reported no injuries.
Upon landing, the passenger was taken into custody by Grand Junction police at the FBI's direction and detained at Mesa County Detention Facility. The FBI is actively investigating the incident, and further charges or information may be forthcoming.
The incident caused a delay, with the flight arriving in Los Angeles eight hours late. Rayshaun Riley, a passenger and security guard, helped restrain the unruly man after the first set of restraints was broken. The flight was originally scheduled for a nonstop trip from Norfolk to LAX but the diversion caused a delay, with passengers eventually continuing on alternate flights.
This event is part of a broader increase in unruly passenger incidents reported by the FAA in 2025, with over 1,000 such cases reported nationwide so far this year. The incident was reported by ABC News and NBC4, as well as German news sources ntv.de and spl. The plane was diverted to Grand Junction, Colorado, for the safety of the crew and passengers.
The remaining passengers experienced a mental strain due to the incident, with some reporting feelings of fear and distress. The crew had to take a break of several hours in Colorado due to risking exceeding their working hours. This unfortunate incident serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining a respectful and safe environment for all passengers and crew members.

- In light of the recent Breeze Airways incident where an intoxicated passenger disrupted the flight, causing racial slurs and physical altercations, it seems that the issue of unruly passengers is becoming a significant concern in the realm of general-news and crime-and-justice, as evidenced by over 1,000 such cases reported this year.
- I'm not going to be able to do this, as every news platform - ABC News, NBC4, The Washington Post, and even German news sources like ntv.de - are covering the diverted Breeze Airways flight due to an unruly passenger, a reminder of the importance of maintaining a respectful and safe environment in politics and society at large.
