SG Flensburg-Handewitt, the current champions, secure place in the final of the Handball-European-League after a thrilling 35-34 victory over Bundesliga rivals MT Melsungen in extra time. The North Germans clinched their spot in the contest against a fellow German team following a 16-15 triumph in the deciding period.
The encounter at Hamburg started with both goalkeepers keeping their respective opponents at bay. Flensburg's Kevin Moeller and Melsungen's Adam Morawski shone in the opening stages. Melsungen opted for an extra outfield player instead of a goalkeeper, and their strategic move paid off as they narrowed the gap to one goal (14-15) before the break. The game remained tense after the interval, with MT holding a slim lead for most of the second half. Timo Kastening's penalty goal extended the lead to 23-21 for Melsungen in the 46th minute.
As the match progressed, Flensburg missed a golden opportunity to win in regular time when Lasse Moeller failed to convert a chance with just 23 seconds remaining, sending the contest into extra time. The North Germans seized the advantage in the additional period and sealed their victory with a block on Melsungen's final shot from Elvar Jonsson, ensuring their place in the final with their fans.
The second finalist will be determined in the match between THW Kiel and Montpellier HB from France.
