Flames regroup with Coleman's return and Olympic energy in mini camp
The Calgary Flames returned to the ice on Wednesday for their first practice in two weeks. The session kicked off a week-long 'mini training camp' as the team regrouped. Players and coaches showed energy, with some key names making progress in their recovery and new faces joining the lineup.
Blake Coleman took part in full-contact drills for the first time since his injury on 8 January in Boston. Head Coach Ryan Huska welcomed him back, calling Coleman a 'heart and soul' player who brings intensity and the right approach to every shift. His return to practice saw him lined up with Morgan Frost and Matvei Gridin.
The team also welcomed Matvei Gridin, recalled from the AHL's Wranglers. Huska made it clear he views Gridin as an NHL-calibre player, pointing to his recent form—four points in his last five NHL games and 29 points in 36 AHL games this winter. During practice, Gridin worked alongside Coleman and Frost, while another line featured Mikael Backlund with Matt Coronato and Yegor Sharangovich.
Off the ice, the Flames kept an eye on Olympic action. The players watched Canada's game against Czechia during their session, reacting loudly when Canada scored. Adam Klapka's frustration and cheers were noticeable as the game unfolded. Meanwhile, Martin Pospisil and Slovakia advanced to the Olympic semi-finals, with Huska noting Pospisil's strong performances and the positive impact on his confidence.
The Flames now focus on their mini camp, with Coleman's return and Gridin's recall adding depth. Pospisil's Olympic success and the team's engagement with international hockey highlight a period of renewed energy. Practices will continue through the week as they prepare for the next phase of the season.
