In the heart of Cordoba, Spain, a fire broke out at the Mezquita-Catedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site and a testament to the city's rich history, on the night of August 8, 2025. The fire started in the Almánzor chapel, one of the easternmost parts of the mosque with many chapels from the 16th and 17th centuries.

Fortunately, the fire was quickly contained by the city's fire department, preventing a catastrophic loss. The roof of the Almánzor chapel collapsed, and neighboring areas, like the Chapel of the Annunciation, sustained some damage due to smoke and fire. However, the main structure was spared, and the monument remains open and safe for visitors.

The cause of the fire was a short circuit in an electric floor-sweeping machine stored inside the chapel. Firefighters arrived promptly, extinguished the blaze by around midnight, and maintained a presence overnight to prevent reignition.

The Mezquita-Catedral, originally built as a mosque in the 8th century, is renowned for its endless rows of red-and-white horseshoe arches supported by over 850 columns. Over the centuries, it was expanded and reflected the wealth and power of the caliphate. In the 16th century, a Renaissance nave was built right in the middle of the Islamic prayer hall, creating a unique synthesis of Moorish and Christian architectural styles.

The Mezquita-Catedral is more than just a historical site; it is a mirror of Spain's cultural diversity and its tumultuous history. It was a mosque until the Christian reconquest in 1236, when it was converted into a Catholic cathedral. Today, it attracts over two million visitors each year, making it one of the most significant buildings in Spain.

Restoration efforts are already planned, and heritage safety reforms will be implemented to better protect the site in the future. Officials, including Cordoba's mayor José María Bellido, praised the rapid and effective response that averted an "irreparable cultural loss."
