Fire at Córdoba's Mezquita-Catedral Causes Limited Damage

A fire that broke out at the Mezquita-Catedral in Córdoba, Spain, on the night of August 8, 2025, caused limited damage, primarily concentrated in the Almánzor chapel. The historic monument, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, reopened to visitors the very next day with restricted access to the affected chapels while restoration assessments are underway.

The fire originated from an electrical short circuit in a floor-sweeping machine inside the Almánzor chapel. The roof collapsed over approximately 25 square meters, and the adjacent Chapel of the Annunciation sustained smoke damage, scorched vaults, a blackened 19th-century altarpiece, and a compromised column. Despite the damage, the major structural elements of the Mosque-Cathedral were spared.

The fire was brought under control by the fire department after approximately one and a half hours. Video footage showed flames shooting out of the roof of the cathedral, but the rapid and well-coordinated response by firefighters managed to extinguish the blaze within hours, preventing further spread and major structural loss.

The Mezquita-Catedral, attracting visitors from all over the world, is renowned for its endless rows of red and white horseshoe arches supported by over 850 columns. Originally built in the 8th century, it is one of the largest former mosque buildings worldwide, reflecting the wealth and power of the caliphate. In the 16th century, a Renaissance nave was built right in the middle of the Islamic prayer hall, creating a unique synthesis of Moorish and Christian architectural styles.

The cathedral of Córdoba is one of Spain's most significant buildings, serving as a mirror of Spain's cultural diversity and turbulent history. During its time as a mosque, it was one of Europe's intellectual centers. Spanish media reports state that more than two million people visited the cathedral last year.

Local authorities emphasized swift action averted an "irreparable cultural loss," and plans for restoration and improved heritage safety measures have already been initiated. The extent of the damage to the cathedral is currently unclear, but restoration work is expected to commence soon.
