Flags in Daugavpils city spur concerns among locals
Daugavpils Embraces City-Wide Flag Display During Birthday Celebration
Last weekend, Daugavpils, the second-largest city in Latvia, celebrated its birthday with a unique display of city flags. For the first time, residents were invited to adorn their buildings with Daugavpils flags, marking a significant step towards fostering local pride and reinforcing a shared identity.
The Daugavpils city flags were distributed to residents, municipal institutions, capital company buildings, and multi-storey buildings managed by the Housing and Communal Services Company. Thousands of flags were made available, with an additional 1,500 ordered due to high demand, amounting to approximately €9,000 (excluding VAT) from the city budget.
The tourist information centre also joined in, distributing 3,000 free flags for cars. Despite the enthusiasm, opinions about the display varied among the residents. While some expressed positive sentiments, others found the campaign strange, questioning its purpose.
Historian Dmitrijs Oļehnovičs believed that the Latvian flag should have been displayed alongside the Daugavpils flag, symbolising a balance between local and national identity. A political scientist suggested that the flag campaign could potentially cultivate local patriotism hand in hand with distrust of the state as a whole. On the other hand, a lecturer at Riga Stradiņš University and political scientist, Lelde Metla-Rozentāle, emphasised that local patriotism is positive when it goes hand in hand with pride in one's country and does not create opposition between the city and the state.
One resident expressed happiness about the temporary display of city flags but would find a prolonged display suspicious. Another resident stated that they were neutral about having a flag on their car. Researcher Anželika Litvinoviča found the flag campaign strange and questioned its purpose.
The flagpoles at the town hall were reserved for this event, with only a small space at the entrance available for the Latvian and European flags. This discrepancy in the display of city and national flags has sparked discussions about the implications of such displays on local and national patriotism.
However, the search results do not provide specific information about public opinion in Daugavpils concerning the city-wide flag display during its birthday celebration. To gain a more comprehensive understanding of this topic, local news outlets, public opinion polls, or social media platforms focused on Daugavpils around the time of the celebration would be more informative sources.
Līga Rudzīte-Besakirska, head of the Tourism Department, stated that the response was more enthusiastic than expected. Despite the diverse opinions, the city-wide flag display in Daugavpils appears to be a step towards strengthening local identity and fostering a sense of unity within the city.
