Five-vehicle pileup shuts down icy B294 near Simmersfeld overnight
A multi-vehicle crash took place on the B294 near Simmersfeld on Thursday evening. Icy road conditions led to a chain reaction involving five vehicles. No injuries were reported, but the road remained closed for hours.
The incident began when a 25-year-old driver of a Mercedes lost control on an icy curve. The car skidded into oncoming traffic and collided with a 38-year-old truck driver's vehicle in a side-impact crash.
A 55-year-old Opel driver then grazed the Mercedes before coming to a stop further down the road. Meanwhile, a 34-year-old Volkswagen driver managed to brake in time, avoiding a collision. However, a 23-year-old in another Volkswagen rear-ended the 34-year-old's car. Firefighters, paramedics, and road maintenance crews were already on standby for de-icing operations when the crash occurred. Recovery efforts took longer than usual due to the number of vehicles and spilled fluids. The B294 stayed fully closed until after midnight while emergency teams cleared the scene.
The road eventually reopened early Friday morning after cleanup was completed. Authorities reminded drivers to exercise caution in freezing conditions. No further disruptions were reported in the area.
