In a move demonstrating NATO solidarity and a response to potential threats from Russia, the German Air Force is set to deploy Eurofighter Typhoon jets to Poland for several weeks. The deployment, which is expected to last approximately a month, will take place at Minsk Mazowiecki military airport, located east of Warsaw, Poland.

The decision to deploy the jets was announced by Defense Minister Boris Pistorius in January. The Polish Armed Forces' headquarters confirmed this in April, while the German Press Agency reported the news earlier. The German Air Force combat jets have been taking off from Rostock for this purpose.

The role of these jets in protecting NATO’s eastern flank airspace includes monitoring and patrolling NATO airspace directly over Polish territory from Minsk Mazowiecki Air Base near Warsaw. Operational missions are scheduled to commence from August 2025. The jets will provide rapid reaction capability to intercept potential airspace violations at short notice, reinforcing German forces already stationed in southeastern Poland.

The jets will act as a visible deterrent against any increased Russian or Belarusian military activity along NATO’s eastern border. They will complement other German assets in the region, including Eurofighters patrolling northern Poland and the Baltic coastline for countering reconnaissance activities and Patriot air defense systems based in Rzeszów.

Approximately 150 Bundeswehr personnel will support this deployment, emphasizing comprehensive logistical and operational cooperation. This deployment symbolizes NATO's unified commitment to collective defense and readiness to respond to threats on its eastern flank.

Poland, an EU and NATO country, is an important political and military supporter of Ukraine. It is also a hub for Western military aid to Kyiv. Poland sees itself as threatened by Russia and is currently arming up heavily. This deployment is another example of alliance partners' cooperation and their genuine commitment to the security of Central and Eastern Europe.

The deployment of the German Air Force jets to Poland is a significant step in strengthening NATO's presence and deterrence capabilities on its eastern flank, particularly in the run-up to the Russia-Belarus "Zapad-2025" joint military exercises planned for mid-September 2025. The jets will be based at Minsk Mazowiecki military airport during their deployment.

During the deployment, scheduled to last from August 2025, the German Air Force jets will not only be based at Minsk Mazowiecki military airport but also engage in sports activities, such as friendly football matches with their Polish counterparts, as a symbol of the strong bond between NATO allies and their commitment to unity. The games will take place during weekends, bringing the European-league teams together off the battlefield.

In recognition of Poland's support for Ukraine and its role as a hub for Western military aid, several German football clubs have pledged to donate match kits to Ukrainian teams, boosting their morale and further strengthening bonds between these European nations. This act of solidarity in sports mirrors the military commitment demonstrated by the deployment of German Air Force jets, signifying the shared determination to protect and support one another.
