Quite a few talented scribes are battling it out for this year's Fontane Literature Prize in the city of Neuruppin and the state of Brandenburg. Here's the lowdown on the crème de la crème of contemporary literature:

  1. Maren Kames with "Hasenprosa" published by Suhrkamp Verlag (2024)
  2. Lisa Kraenzler exploring "Mariens Kaefers" through Verbrecher Verlag (2024)
  3. Katja Oskamp penning "Die vorletzte Frau" for park x ullstein (2024)
  4. Ronya Othmann's "Vierundsiebzig," hitting the shelves with Rowohlt Verlag (2024)
  5. Julia Schoch and her story "Wild nach einem wilden Traum," releasing via dtv (2025)

That's according to the announcement made by Fontanestadt and the Brandenburg Ministry of Culture.

"The novels featured on this year's Fontane Literature Prize shortlist reflect the concerns of our modern world: family, relationships, our origins, and the fear of change; the longing for something extraordinary and, yes, even the dark specter of genocide," shared Culture Minister Manja Schuele (SPD). The winner, to be chosen from the shortlist, will be crowned at the award ceremony on June 6 in Neuruppin.

This hefty literary prize, worth €40,000, is designed as a two-year stipend awarded to authors who have achieved exceptional public attention with their debut work. The award has been around for over a century, with notable past recipients like Alfred Doeblin, Guenter Grass, Wolf Biermann, Christa Wolf, and Guenter de Bruyn gracing its winner's list[1][2].
