A meteoric rise to fame, a secrets-kept battle with an eating disorder, and a tough, introspective break - that's Sophia Thiel's story. This German fitness icon, born in 1995, marked a path for many with her discipline and determination. But her journey wasn't always rosy, and the road to recovery was a long, hard fight. On her 30th birthday on March 13, we look back on her extraordinary journey.

From troubled youth to fitness icon

Growing up in Rosenheim, Bavaria, Sophia Thiel struggled with weight issues in her formative years. In 2012, at just 17, she embarked on a fitness journey that transformed her life. She lost over 25 kilograms in three years through bodybuilding, chronicling her progress on her YouTube channel. Soon, the channel climbed in popularity, making Thiel one of the first German fitness influencers.

As her influence grew, so did her audience - reaching over 900,000 subscribers on YouTube, amassing more than 190 million video views, launching fitness programs, books, and fashion lines. Yet, the glamour masked the inner turmoil that overwhelmed her.

Hiding in the Shadows

The pressure got to Thiel in 2019. After a grueling two-year battle, she took a break from the public eye, escaping to Los Angeles for some self-discovery. During this time, she finally came clean about her bulimia - a disorder she battled silently since 2015. "I had my first secret binges. I was so exhausted. My body fat percentage was very low, which was due to my diets that were basically just protein and carbohydrates," she revealed in an interview with "Women's Health".

The public eye was too much to bear, and Thiel felt like she was living in a self-created prison of dietary regimens. "I thought I had to diet every day, that's just the price I pay for recognition, respect, and success," she confessed in another interview. She left social media to focus on healing, especially avoiding negative comments about her appearance.

Stepping Back into the Spotlight

Two years later, Thiel returned to the public scene with a newfound commitment to promoting body positivity and mental health. Her memoir, "Come Back Stronger - My Long Journey to Myself," documented her struggle and path to recovery. Reflecting on her time away, she admitted, "I remember vividly how empty and lost I felt walking these streets alone, weak and full of fear for the future."

But Thiel's comeback wasn't without setbacks. In 2024, she participated in the 17th season of "Let's Dance" and placed 8th with professional dancer Alexandru Ionel. The pressure led to significant mental issues and relapses. "After 'Let's Dance,' I fell ill and then emotionally collapsed. I also unfortunately had relapses of binge eating and slipped into a depressive phase," she shared in a "Spiegel" interview.

Looking Ahead

Now, Thiel is ready to embrace a new year, learning to find her center and focus on what truly matters for her mental and physical wellbeing. "Instead of unrealistic resolutions, it's about finding my center more and more, and giving my body and mind what they truly need on all levels," she asserted in January.

As Thiel starts her 31st year, she is embraced by love - enthusiastically stating that she's "having the best time of my life. I honestly can't remember the last time I felt this free and self-determined." Here's hoping this incredible influencer continues to inspire and uplift her millions of followers, showing that even in darkness, there's always a path to the light.
