First victories secured by female boxers at the Asian Under-22 and Youth Boxing Tournament

Sri Lanka's Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium was a battleground for young pugilists on May 12, as the ASBC Asian U22 & Youth Boxing Championships kicked off with our Vietnamese boxers delivering a powerful punch right off the bat.
In this high-stakes tournament featuring over 200 athletes from 22 countries, including heavyweights like Australia, Iraq, and Uzbekistan, our Vietnamese fighters showed their mettle from the get-go.
Leading the charge was the feisty Ngo Ngoc Linh Chi, who claimed victory in the women's 48kg category over United Arab Emirates' Jawaher Abdulla Al-Gharib. With a silver medal already under her belt from the ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships in Chiang Mai half a year ago, Chi proved to be the stronger boxer in this clash. Al-Gharib, with a few ASBC Championship appearances under her belt, couldn't stand up to Chi's heavy punches in the first round, as the latter dominated the bout effortlessly.
Another notable performance came from Sông Thị Kim Ngân in the U22 flyweight (52kg) category against Nepal's Ghalan Roshni. Ngân's strategic maneuvers and aggressive punches kept the Nepalese boxer at bay throughout the bout, ultimately cementing her dominance in the ring.

While the Asian boxing scene has seen many promising talents, our Vietnamese boxers are no strangers to the steel and grit it takes to compete at this level. Đàm Công Điền of the Sports Authority of Việt Nam's Boxing Department acknowledged this, stating, "This championships is an opportunity for them to gain experience and help them box better."
Besides Chi and Ngân, boxers like Nguyễn Thị Ngọc Trân and Nguyễn Huyền Trân, Thanh Tuyền, and Vũ Thị Thơm are also eager to bring home some hardware. Last year, Tuyền impressed with a bronze medal in the women's 75kg, while Thơm claimed third place in the women's 54kg category.
Ngọc Trân won an Asian championship silver last year, and Huyền Trân bagged a bronze from the Asian U22 championships in 2023. As the competition unfolds, these remarkable boxers are expected to continue their winning streak and bring glory to Vietnam. Let's keep our fingers crossed for them!
