Activity Book - What Rights Do Children Have? - First German Picture Book 'My Rights' Teaches Children Their Fundamental Rights

The Children's Protection Association of Mainz has published a unique images book, the first of its kind in Germany, focusing on children's rights. Titled 'My Rights', the book is published by Eifelbild Verlag in Daun and aims to educate children about their rights in a fun and engaging way.

The images book, illustrated by Mele Brink, uses everyday situations in the Rhineland-Palatinate state capital Mainz to explain children's rights. It covers various settings, including the school playground, swimming pool, and carnival, making the themes relatable and transferable to any city. The book addresses family conflicts and cultural and societal problems related to children's rights, ensuring children understand their rights to be seen, heard, and taken seriously.

The director of the Children's Protection Association of Mainz, Katharina Gutsch, emphasizes that every child has these fundamental rights. The book illustrates rights such as protection, promotion, participation, education, health, and welfare, all based on the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), which Germany ratified in 1992. Efforts are ongoing to strengthen these rights legally, with calls for their inclusion in the German Basic Law to ensure children's voices are heard according to their age and maturity, safeguarding their well-being.

The 'My Rights' images book is a significant step in educating children about their rights, making complex legal concepts accessible and engaging. Published by Eifelbild Verlag in Daun, it is the first nationwide images book to tackle children's rights, setting a precedent for future educational resources.
