First FC Heidenheim Suffers Defeat Against Bayer Leverkusen, Marking Their Initial Loss

Bayer Leverkusen is wriggling its way further into the title race after a nail-biting 1:0 victory against 1. FC Heidenheim. Lukas Hradecky, the team's captain, had a blunt assessment after the luck-infused victory: "We scraped by, and that's the long and short of it." The Werkself secured a minor advantage, staying six points behind FC Bayern. Coach Alonso is far from satisfied, though.

Heidenheim was in control for much of the game, and Leverkusen had several moments of narrow escapes. Emiliano Buendia (90.+1) salvaged the win for Bayer, making them sit pretty within six points of FC Bayern. A comeback is not off the table yet. "We've got to keep fighting and see where it leads," Hradecky said, adding, "But time is running out. The games are aplenty, and Bayern isn't wobbling now."

However, the additional pressure on Munich, who are gearing up for an intense Champions League quarter-final match against Inter Milan (8th and 16th April), offers some hope. "They've got their work cut out for them. If they pull off these wins, we'll have to concede defeat," Hradecky said. "But as long as it's mathematically possible, we'll keep chasing them."[1]

Heidenheim continues to march forward despite the disheartening loss. "That was a mighty bitter pill to swallow," Schmidt shared. "We almost played flawlessly until the last gasp. The outcome leaves me speechless." With the upcoming challenging schedule, at least a point would have been significant: The FCH faces Eintracht Frankfurt, FC Bayern, and VfB Stuttgart in the next three games.

Alonso had hoped for a response from his team after the disappointing performance in Bielefeld and had yet to give up on the fading title dream. Leverkusen, who might have been without injured Florian Wirtz for the foreseeable future, struggled from the word go against a vigilant Heidenheim. Defensively, Leverkusen displayed weaknesses, just as in the midweek match.[3]

Adrian Beck (11.) opened up the first big chance for Heidenheim, who played without their injured striker Budu Siwsiwadse. The opportunities piled up from there: Frans Kratzig (18'), Benedikt Gimber (26'), a post and crossbar hit from close range, and Marvin Pieringer (32., 33.) all missed golden opportunities. For Leverkusen, there was nothing on offer offensively. In the second half, Leverkusen managed to create a more even playing field, but there was still no sign of control or goal-scoring opportunities. Instead, it seemed as though the guests were trying to keep Heidenheim at bay. Then, Buendia made his move from the penalty area.
