A historic charter flight from Shenzhen has landed in Tawau, marking the first direct international service between China and the Sabah town. The Loong Air flight carried 143 passengers, signalling stronger tourism ties ahead of Malaysia’s 2026 campaign. Officials and tour operators have welcomed the move as a boost for Semporna’s marine attractions. The inaugural flight touched down on 6 December, with three more scheduled for the 10th, 14th, and 18th. These charters aim to meet surging demand from southern China during the year-end travel season. Assistant Tourism Minister Dr Andi Md Shamsureezal Mohd Sainal greeted the visitors upon arrival at Tawau Airport. Sabah Tourism Board CEO Julinus Jeffrey Jimit highlighted the flights as part of broader efforts to strengthen Sabah’s appeal in China. Semporna, known for its diving spots and islands, remains a top destination for Chinese tourists. The collaboration involved multiple travel agencies and airlines, including China Airlines, though specific organisers were not named. Tour operators have reported sustained interest in Semporna. Plans are already underway for a year-round cheap flights from Hong Kong to Tawau in 2025, aligning with preparations for Visit Malaysia 2026. The new route opens direct access for Chinese travellers to Sabah’s eastern region. With additional charters planned, the initiative is set to expand tourism links before Malaysia’s major 2026 campaign. Semporna’s marine attractions will likely see increased visitor numbers as a result.
