In a dramatic finish, Heidenheim has ensured another season in Germany's top flight by securing a 2:1 victory against SV Elversberg in the relegation return match. The go-ahead goal came from Leonardo Scienza in the 95th minute, snatching victory from the jaws of defeat for Elversberg.
Heidenheim's captain Patrick Mainka expressed his relief after the match, stating, "That was months of hard work. Now we can finally put a line under the season. Elversberg gave us everything."
The encounter, played before 10,000 spectators, saw Mathias Honsak open the scoring for Heidenheim in the 9th minute, only for Elversberg to respond through Robin Fellhauer's equalizer in the 31st minute. The match featured a strong start from Heidenheim, with Marvin Pieringer denying by Elversberg's goalkeeper Nicolas Kristof within the opening five minutes. A series of setbacks, however, followed for both teams: Sahin had to leave the field due to injury for Elversberg, while Pieringer was forced off for Heidenheim later in the first half.
Undeterred, Elversberg fought back in the first half and scored the equalizer through Fellhauer, with the game remaining tense until Scienza's late heroics sealed Heidenheim's survival.
