First Avian Flu Case in Brandenburg: 2,900 Birds Culled
A poultry farm in Brandenburg has reported the first case of avian flu this autumn. Around 2,900 birds have been humanely euthanized following the outbreak of the H5N1 virus subtype.
The affected farm is located in Neuhardenberg, Märkisch-Oderland district. Authorities have set up a three-kilometer protection zone and a ten-kilometer surveillance zone around the site. This is a standard procedure to prevent the spread of the disease.
The Landeslabor Berlin-Brandenburg and the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institute have confirmed the presence of the H5N1 virus. This subtype is known to be highly pathogenic to birds and can also cause severe disease in humans, although the risk of transmission is low.
Restrictions on poultry holdings are currently in place within the affected zones. Officials are working to contain the outbreak and prevent further spread. This is the first avian flu case in Brandenburg this fall, and authorities are monitoring the situation closely.
